Dionysios, in his own words:
“I became interested in becoming a therapist in my young adult years, as I searched for meaning in life. With a background in biochemistry, and primary interest in medicine, I knew that my ultimate goal was to help others. It was during my own personal experience with therapy (as a client) that I came to really value relationships with people and the therapeutic power of unconditional positive regard. I came to believe that in the space of psychotherapy, transformative change occurs simply by genuinely existing with another person.
“As a first generation Greek-American, cultural traditions and family bonds are very dear to me. Yet I’ve also seen that within tight-knit cultures, stigma towards mental health issues and treatment can fester like an uncared-for wound. In effect, pursuing this profession was an act of stepping out of my comfort zone. Through making this ‘leap,’ I now have a chance to connect with those who may be ambivalent about seeking help.
“I consider therapy to be a privilege… an opportunity for personal growth… a chance to slow down, seek respite, and examine parts of you that enable suffering. On a personal level, I sustain my own well-being through presence with my wife and children, quiet walks, mindfully washing the dishes or folding clothes, taking naps, playing the piano, and on rare occasion taking a hike through nature. I appreciate life and the need for balance, and hope that through my own efforts at self-care I can support clients in caring more fully for themselves, as well.”
